A BILL TO REGULATE! THE SALE OF FOBEIGN AND COLONIAL Meat. Wheeeas it is desirable to make regulations for preventing the sale of foreign and colonial meat as British and Irish meat : Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows : — Short Title. 1. This Act may be cited as " The Sale of Foreign and Colonial Meat Act, 1890." Commencement of Act. 2. This Act shall come into operation on the first day of January, one thousand eight hundred and ninety-one. Interpretation. 3. In this Act— The expression "meat" moans the flesh of any four-footed animal commonly used for human food, other than hares, rabbits, or other small game : The expression "foreign or colonial meat " means meat killed elsewhere than within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man: The expression "British and Irish meat " means meat killed within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man : The expression "cart" includes cart, barrow, tricycle, and every other description of wheeled conveyance. Restriction on sale by retail of uncooked foreign or colonial meat. 4. (1.) It shall not be lawful for any person to sell, or to offer, expose, or keep for sale, by retail for human food any uncooked foreign or colonial meat in any shop, stall, or place other than a shop, stall, or place over or on whicli there shall be at all times painted, posted, or placed in a conspicuous position and so as to be easily legible throughout the whole time, whether by night or day, during which such meat is being ottered or exposed for sale, words indicating that foreign or colonial meat is sold there. (2.) It shall not be lawful for any person to sell or to offer for sale by retail for human food foreign or colonial meat elsewhere than in such shop, stall, or place as aforesaid, unless— (a.) He shall first have given to the purchaser notice in writing, whether on an invoice bill or otherwise, that such meat is foreign or colonial; or (b.) The purchaser shall have expressly ordered or asked for foreign or colonial meat. Restriction on conveyance in carts, &c, of foreign or colonial meat. 5. It shall not be lawful for any person to carry or to cause to be carried uncooked foreign or colonial meat in or on any cart for the purpose of sale by retail or delivery by retail for human food, other than a cart on which there shall be painted or inscribed in a conspicuous position so as to bo always easily legible, words indicating that such person is a seller of foreign or colonial meat. Restriction on fraudulent sale. 6. It shall not be lawful for any person to sell or offer tor sale foreign or colonial meat us or for British or Irish meat. Penalty. 7. Any person who sells, offers, exposes, or keeps for sale, or supplies, or carries, or causes to be carried, any foreign or colonial meat in contravention of any of the provisions of this Act, shall for every such offence be liable to a penalty not exceeding twenty pounds, to be recovered in a summary manner.
