ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives. Friday, the 14th Day of July, 1922. Ordered, " That Standing Order No. 219 be suspended, and that a Select Committee he appointed, consisting of eleven members, to examine and report upon questions relating to railways ; with power to call for persons and papers ; three to be a quorum : the Committee to consist of Mr. Bollard, Mr. J, S. Dickson, Mr. Glenn, Mr. Howard, the Right Hon. Mr. Massey, Mr. Nash, Mr. Sidey, Mr. S. G. Smith, Mr. Sykes, Mr. Witty, and the mover."—(Hon. Mr. Guthrie.) Wednesday, the 18th Day of October, 1922. Ordered, " That the Government Railways Amendment Bill bo referred to the Railways Committee."—(Hon. Mr. Guthrie.)

EEPOETS. No. 4, 1921. —Petition of the Wanganui Harbour Board. Praying for restriction of operations of the Railway Department on reclaimed and other lands adjacent to the wharf at Wanganui. I am directed to report that, at the request of the petitioners, the Committee recommends that leave be given for the petition to be withdrawn. 18th August, 1922.

No. 63. —Petition of William Hodge, of Christchurch. Praying that money alleged to be due to him by the Railway Department be paid, and that action be taken to compel the Railway Employees' Sick Benefit Society to pay £29 12s. 6d., alleged to be due to him. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make on this petition. 18th August, 1922.

No. 59. —Petition of the Wanganui Harbour Board. Praying that a Commission be appointed to inquire into the operations of the Railway Department on reclaimed and other lands adjacent to the wharf at Wanganui. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 12th September, 1922.

No. 147. —Petition of W. T. Benefield and 72 Others, of Aramoho, Wanganui. Praying that the footpath between Kelvin Street and Aramoho Railway-station be not closed. I am directed to report that, as the Railway Department has complied with the prayer of the petition, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 12th September, 1922.

No. 334. —Petition of Patrick C. Carr, of Frankton Junction. Praying for a grant to cover expenses incurred when he was transferred from Auckland to Frankton Junction Railway-station. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 26th September, 1922.

No. 329. —Petition of Stella Flanagan, of Paeroa. Praying for compassionate allowance on account of her late husband's services in the Railway service. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should bo referred to the Government for consideration. 26th September, 1922.

No. 223. —Petition of Elizabeth C. McLeod, of Dunedin. Praying for compensation for loss of her husband, whose life was lost while in the employ of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th September, 1922.

No. 303. —Petition of P. Oronin, of Ohakune Junction. Praying for compensation for loss of employment in the Railway Department. I am directed, to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th September, 1922.

No. 352. —Petition of Mary J. Johnson, of Dunedin. Praying for a compassionate grant as recompense for her late husband's services whilst in the employ of the Railway Department. I am directed to report that, as the Railway Department has complied with the prayer of the petition, the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth October, 1922.

Government Railways Amendment Bill. The Railways Committee, to which was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has the honour to report that the said Bill has been carefully considered, and the Committee recommends that it be allowed to proceed without amendment. 20th October, 1922.

No. 317.—Petition of the GREYMouTn Borough Council. Praying for compensation for protective works constructed, which prevented flooding of land adjacent to the Grey River. I am directed to report that the Committee is of opinion this petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th October, 1922.

No. 340.—Petition of A. J. Hart, of Edendale, and 1,954 Others. Praying that an overhead bridge be erected at the level crossing at Kingsland Railway-station. I am directed to report that the Committee approves of the offer to the Mount Albert" Borough Council, and that the petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 28th October, 1922.

Special Report. I have the honour to report that the Railways Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the able and impartial manner in which the Chairman, Mr. Bollard, has presided over its deliberations ; and further desires that this resolution be reported to the House.
