No. 1. Circular Letter from the Colonial Seceetaet to the Supeeintendents of Peovinces. (70-1,680.) I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of Circular 70-1,680, asking for information as to the overdraft of the Provincial Account, in terms of an Order (No. 19-70) of the House of Eepresentatives, and, in reply, to state that on the 30th June, 1870, the Province of Wellington was indebted to the Bank of New Zealand in the sum of £10,000, covered by a Deficiency Bill in terms of " The Provincial Audit Act Amendment Act, 1869." Enclosure in No. 4. Eetuen showing Amount of Overdbaets by the Peovince of Auckland, from 3rd Sept., 1869, to 30th .Tune, 1870, and the total amount at the debit of the Province on 30th June, 1870. From the sth to the 18th October, 1869, the Provincial Account with the Bank of Now Zealand was overdrawn £4,500. Previous to or subsequent to that date the account does not appear to have been overdrawn. On 30th June, 1870, no overdraft. E. B. Lusir, Provincial Treasury, Auckland, 18th July, 1870. No. 5. Mr. C. Hoos to the Hon. W. Gisboene. Sic, — County Chairman's Office, Hokitika, 25th July, 1870. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter No. 372, of 6th July, 1870, enclosing an Order of the House of Eepresentatives for a return of Provincial and County overdrafts. In reply I have the honor to inform you that tho overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand on the 31st December, 1869, was £5,329 ; deficiency bills, £5,000; and outstanding accounts unpaid, £3,000 ; making a total of £13,329. On the 30th June, 1870, the overdraft amounted to £5,952 4s. lOd. ; and the outstanding accounts unpaid, £3,019 35.; showing a decrease in the liability of £4,357 12s. 2d., as the deficiency bills have been liquidated during the past six months. The overdraft varies, but it is on no account to exceed £5,000. I have also the honor to forward herewith an extract from the West Coast Times, containing a statement made by me in the County Council, showing the financial position of the County, which will perhaps give you more information on the subject. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your circular of the 6th July, enclosing copy of an Order of the House of Eepresentatives, No. 19-70, calling for a return of Provincial and County overdrafts, and in reply beg to enclose a return from the Provincial Treasury.
