1886. NEW ZEAL A N D.

POSITION OF NATIVE RESERVES (RETURNS SHOWING).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated 16th July, 188 S. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return giving the names of all the Commissioners of Native Reserves, with a report from each, showing the position of all Native reserves in the colony, and also showing any reserves set apart under the various Native Reserves Acts ; if they have been sold, and, if so, to whom, and under what arrangements, and for what price per acre, and where such reserves are situated."—(Mb. IjOCKE.)

Betuen showing the Names of all the Commissioners of Native Besebves. Nil. Note.— Previous to the death of Major Heaphy there were three Commissioners of Native Eeserves—viz., Major Heaphy, Major Parris for the North Island, and Mr. Alexander Mackay for the South Island. Upon the happening of that event, Mr. Mackay was appointed sole Commissioner for the colony, which position he occupied until his appointment as Judge of the Native Lands Court on Ist January last, when he resigned the Commissionership of Native Beserves. The administration of such of the Native reserves as fell within the definition of the Act next hereinafter referred to was transferred from the Commissioner of Native Eeserves to the Public Trustee by " The Native Eeserves Act, 1882," and, since Ist January, 1883, the Public Trustee has been the responsible officer. There are, however, a number of reserves which do not fall under such definition, as to which the Public Trustee has no knowledge. The annexed return shows the present position of all Native reserves on the books of the Public Trust Office, and also, if any are sold, to whom. —E. C. Hamerton, Public Trustee. 4th August, 188 S.
