NORTH ISLAND AND SOUTH ISLAND: COMPARATIVE RETURNS OF PUBLIC-WORKS EXPENDITURE AND LANDS EXPENDITURE AND REVENUE.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 31st July, 1901. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a comparative return between the North Island and the South Island, showing respectively for each Island up to the end of the last financial year,—(l) The total expenditure for roads and bridges; (2) the total cost of railway construction; (3) the acreage of laid acquired under the Land for Settlements Acts, and the total cost to the Crown in settling people upon these lands ; and (4) the total amount paid by the New Zealand Government for all other lands acquired by the Crown, and the total amount received by that Government for all of these lands disposed of by them." —(Mr. Palmeb.)

Comparative Return between the North and South Islands, showing respectively for each Island up to 31st March, 1901,—(1) The Total Expenditure for Roads, Bridges, &c.; (2) the Total Cost of Railway Construction; (3) the Acreage of Land acquired under the Land for Settlements Act, and the Total Cost to the Crown in settling People upon these Lands; and (4) the Total Amount paid by the New Zealand Government for other Lands acquired by the Crown.

The total amount received by the Government for lands disposed of after purchase by the Government cannot be stated, separate accounts not having been kept distinguishing the nature of lands from which revenue has been derived.
