COIN-IN-THE-SLOT TELEPHONE BUSINESS FOR YEAR ENDED 31st MARCH, 1914, AND FOR THE MONTHS OF APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE, 1914.

Laid on the Table of the House of Representatives by Leave.

Return of Coin-in-the-slot Telephone Business tor Year ended 31st March, 1914, and for the Months of April, May, and June, 1,914. The revenue derived for the financial year ended the 31st March last from coin-in-the-slot telephones was £2,633 9s. sd. The number of machines installed at the end of the year was 93. The revenue for the month of April, 1914, was £338 Is. Bd., for the month of May £317, and for the month of June £323 3s. 7d. The average takings per machine for April was £3 13s. 6d., and for May £3 6s. A statement attached gives the takings in detail for the month of June. The number of machines in operation on the 30th June, 1914, was 99. With the object of extending the installation of slot telephones and affording the large centres of population equal facilities in the use of the machines, also in view of the numerous applications for the extension of the system, the Post and Telegraph Department was instructed to have prepared a comprehensive report by its Telegraph Engineers as to the most suitable sites in the principal centres for the installation of these machines, special consideration to be given to the question of placing machines in positions most convenient to the public, and particularly in localities where the residents are not subscribers or in a position to subscribe to a telephone exchange. The sites selected have been carefully reviewed, and instructions have been issued to install machines as soon as possible at a number of points which are considered in most pressing need of the service. It is intended that the installation of machines at other points will be undertaken as circumstances warrant without any'undue delay. Of new positions proposed, instructions have been issued for the installation of machines as quickly as possible at eight sites in Auckland, eight sites in Christchurch, five sites in Dunedin, three sites in Nelson, one. site at Reefton, one site in Westport, and eight sites in Wellington. The estimated total cost of construction of the machines at the approved additional sites amounts to £4,691. General Post Office, 9th July, 1914. F. V. Waters, Acting-Secretary.
