ORDERS OF REFERENCE. Extracts from. the Journals of the Bouse of Representatives. Friday, the 6th Day of September, 1935. Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from Mto Z that may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House: the Committee to consist of the Rev. Mr. Carr, Mr. Hawke, Mr. Kyle, Mr. Linklater, Mr. Lye, Mr. J. N. Massey, Mr. McSkimming, Mr. Semple, Mr. Stallworthy, and the Mover." —(Hon. Sir Alexander Young.) Tuesday, the 10th Day of September, 1935. Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1934-35 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session."—(Right Hon. Mr. Forbes.) No. 42. —Petition of H. T. Scott, of Hamilton. Praying for compensation for loss of employment and for a refund of his trial expenses. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 17th October, 1935.

No. 89. —Petition of G. H. Russell, of Wellington. Praying for inquiry into certain business transactions, and for relief. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for inquiry. 17th October, 1935.

No. 358, 1934-35.—Petition of Bertha M. B. Stott, of Auckland. Praying for a compassionate allowance on account of her husband's death as a result of a railway-crossing accident. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 17th October, 1935.

No. 17. —Petition of W. E. McLean and 5 Others (representing the Forest and Bird Protection Society, Inc., and 6,437 Others). Praying that legislation be enacted to abolish the traffic in birds in New Zealand, and to prevent the catching and liming of both native and imported birds. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and the Committee recommends that the trafficking in and caging of wild birds be prohibited. 17th October, 1935.

No. 44. —Petition of A. J. Mason, of Christchurch. Praying for compensation for legal expenses incurred in connection with his action for dissolution of marriage. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 17th October, 1935.

No. 6.—Petition of J. J. Meikle, of Auckland. Praying that certain reports of Select Committees be given effect to. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration, and for prompt action in view of the advanced age of the petitioner. 17th October, 1935.

No. 91. —Petition of C. R. Willcocks, of Christchurch. Praying for a Magisterial inquiry into his dismissal from the Public Service and for compensation. 1 am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 17th October, 1935.

No. 41. —Petition of P. Wild, of Wellington. Praying for refund of stamp duty. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 17th October, 1935.

No. 112. —Petition of D. Munro, of Christchurch. Praying for reinstatement in the Railway Department, or for superannuation or compensation. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1935.

No. 131.—Petition of Rose A. Murtha, of Westland. Praying for compensation on account of the death of her husband from injuries allegedly sustained while employed by the Public Works Department. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 23rd October, 1935.

No. 139. —Petition of Mary Pilling and 193 Others, of Auckland. Praying for enactment of legislation enabling certain Court proceedings to be reopened. I am directed to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. 23rd October, 1935.

No. 159.—Petition of L. Studholme, of Christchurch. Praying for a full inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his dismissal from the Police Force. I am directed to report that the Committee is of the opinion that the allegations of the Petitioner should be inquired into by a Magistrate, and, with a view to such an inquiry being held, the Committee recommends that the petition should be referred to the Government for consideration. I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M_to Z Committee passed the following resolution: " That this Committee place on record its high appreciation of the care and ability with which the Chairman, Mr.. F. Lye, has conducted the business of the Committee, and directs that this resolution be reported to the House." J. Linklater, A Member of the Committee. 25th October, 1935.

I have the honour to report that at its final meeting the Public Petitions M to Z Committee passed the following resolution: " That the Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the efficient manner in which the Clerk, Mr. E. A. Dobbie, has carried out his duties during the session, and directs that this resolution be reported to the House." 25th October, 1935.
